Iłów and its area are very rich as it comes to its history which is widely proved by monuments and places of memory worth visiting.

The village is located on a loam hill as far from the left side of the Vistula River as about 4 km and about 10 km down the Bzura River estuary near Wyszogród.

The name of the village derives from loam – greasy, brown clay. Rich, documented layers of the high quality raw material for producing building ceramics make it possible to start a big producing factory.

Constant traces of the area being inhabited go back in time as far as Neolithic Age. During the bronze and iron period the area was very well inhabited. Archeological findings from Iłów area, which come from different ages and cultures, are evidence that people inhabited the area or there were many other groups of people staying here during the old ages.

The oldest mention about Iłów in writing comes from 1224. A very important date in the history of the village is the year 1506 when city rights were given to Iłów by king Aleksander Jagiellończyk. In the second half of XVII century Jewish people settled here and in the half of XVIII century the Dutch came here. After the third partition of Poland the area was incorporated into Prussian annexation lands and Germans started to settle here. Since 1815 the area was under Russian annexation. Iłów lost its city rights after the November uprising in 1870.

In between the World Wars there was still a multicultural environment here. In the school of Iłów there were children of different religions: Roman-catholic, Moses, Evangelical-augsburg. According to the General Census of 1921 there were 8893 inhabitants in the commune and nowadays there are 6371 inhabitants. Except from the rich culture Iłów offers exceptional natural environment values, most of all along the Vistula River valley where one can find lots of nesting sites of birds.

500th anniversary of giving Iłów its city rights made local community commemorate this event. Junior High School in Iłów, being a part of the celebration, took the initiative to publish an occasional calendar for the year 2006 which refers to the history and at the same time promotes our little Motherland. What is more, the Jubilee Year will be commemorated with giving to the Junior High School by the Commune Council the name of John Paul II. This is a great honour and commitment  for all school workers and its future generations of pupils.

The community of the School wants to thank the village-mayor, the Commune Council, the Council of Parents,  all transactors, sponsors and the publisher of the calendar for financial support. We also thank the inhabitants for enabling us to see documentation.

I want to thank teachers, other staff and the young for actively taking part in Jubilee Celebrations.

In the Jubilee Year I wish all Iłów inhabitants as many nice memories as possible, reflections and much commitment to build a better future for the sake of all of us and future generations.
